Cancel Culture - Its Impact; Can It Be Stopped?

I am greatly troubled by what I observe in the culture of today. The vitriol and hatred exhibited within our political climate is unrivaled since the days preceding the Civil War. As many of you know, I am a student of the Civil War, and the campaign of 1860 was as hate-filled as one could imagine. The editorial pages were filled with slanderous accusations. Reminds me of today's media representations. But, here is what is different. The slander, the viciousness, the hatred was limited to the editorial pages. The remainder of the newspapers' stories were as objective as could be, given that each reporter views the events of the day through the lens of his/her world view. Today, that balance is missing. One wonders if there are any truly objective reporters left in the world of journalism. Everyone wants to editorialize. What we are witnessing has a name. It is "cancel culture." Yes, its purpose is clearly stated in its name - the elimination of Western cul

An Apologetic Lesson from Judge Amy Comey Barrett's Confirmation Hearings

Yesterday we witnessed the first day in the Senate Judiciary Committee's hearings on the confirmation of Judge Amy Comey Barrett to the United States Supreme Court. Visions of the previous confirmation hearings of Judge Brett Kavenaugh still lingered in our minds and were as the "elephant in the room" yesterday. Although the Republicans had the votes to confirm Judge Barrett, everyone knew that the confirmation process would not be an easy one. I saw several clips from the hearing yesterday and read reports on some of the news sources I follow. I was not surprised at the attacks upon Judge Barrett. Can you believe that she was actually asked if she had ever committed sexual assault upon another person? Wow! Yet, here is what amazed me. Through the long day yesterday, Judge Barrett maintained her composure. She did not raise her voice. She did not show anger. And she answered the questions asked of her in a civil manner. Furthermore, when asked if she had any no

A Flawed Philosophy, But a Powerful Command

Tonight is the only vice-presidential debate before the election. Vice President Pence and Senator Kamala Harris are poles apart when it comes to a political philosophy for our times. Senator Harris is a strong advocate for big, intrusive government. She has no fears of a socialist take-over of our democratic system. Free healthcare for all. Free college tuition for all. Guaranteed jobs with a guaranteed living wage. Under her philosophic ideals, really no area of life would be immune from some type of governmental intrusion. Vice President Pence, on the other hand, is a strong advocate for a free-market, capitalistic ideology - an ideology that has laid the foundation for America's greatness. He also strongly advocates for our republican form of government. Although such a system is not perfect, it has provided the means by which millions of people have come to our shores and have found the fulfilment of their dreams. The debate tonight should offer quite a contrast to

The Training of a New Generation of Anti-Americans

This past week I read an article that frightened me. It was authored by Leo Hohmann and can be found at: www.harbingersdaily.com/how-your-child-is-being-groomed-to-be-the-next-street-rioter. I strongly recommend that you copy and paste this address and read the article in its entirety. The article begins: "The left's obsession with race is driving a wedge between generations and tearing at the social cohesion necessary for any nation to succeed. President Trump's executive order banning critical race theory from federal agencies is a great first step in stopping the Marxist infiltration of government but if he wants to make a real and lasting difference, Trump will turn his focus to the nation's public schools. Here, he will find a cesspool of leftist propaganda being drummed into the heads of students and their teachers....Critical race theory can best be summed up as anti-American hatred dressed in the garb of scientific scholarship....Proponents of critical rac

"Unknown Valor" - A Must Read for Today

With Christmas lists beginning to be formed, over the next few weeks I would like to share with you some books that would make excellent gifts to any readers on your Christmas list. I begin with a book that I just finished reading. It is titled, "Unknown Valor: A Story of Family, Courage, and Sacrifice from Pearl Harbor to Iwo Jima" and was written by Martha MacCallum, who is host of the Fox News Channel program called "The Story," and Romald J. Drez. The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the ending of World War II, both in Europe and in the Pacific. Over the years I have read several books on the fight against the Nazis, but had not read much about the war against Japan. The book tells the story of several young men, who entered into the Marine Corp during those days of World War II, and of their families they left behind - moms and dads, brothers and sisters, wives and sweethearts. Ms. MacCallum then documents the island hopping from Guadalcanal to Iwo

The Abraham Accords and Netflix: Two More Signs of the Times

Yesterday was an historic day as a signing ceremony occurred at the White House signifying the peace accords between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain. Not since 1994, when Israel and Jordan signatured a peace accord between their two nations, has any Arab State entered into a peace agreement with Israel. And President Trump indicated that as many as five other Arab States would soon enter into similar peace accords with Israel. This signing ceremony was largely ignored by the main-stream media as it did not fit in with their asperations of a two-state solution. Yet I believe that these accords between Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain might be the initial step toward such a solution. And, if five other Arab States enter into similar accords, then some Arab-world pressure will be placed upon the Palestinian leadership to come to the peace-table with good faith. For, up to now, the Palestinian leadership has believed that the Arab world stood in solidarity with their cause.

Lessons Learned While in the Black Hills

This past weekend Marlys and I had the privilege of being in the Black Hills of South Dakota with some of our kids and grandkids. It was truly fun to get away, especially to a place where a person got to make his or her own decisions regarding "to mask or not to mask." And what beautiful weather we had and what a beautiful place to be. Spent time in the Badlands National Park - the barrenness created an austere beauty. One can understand why those rocks garnered the name "badlands." As one gazed upon those vast venues of naked rock formations, the question came to mind: What was God's purpose in creating so much barrenness? We had rented a home just a mile from the entrance to Custer State Park. So, early in the morning, a few of us would drive along the "Wildlife Loop" in search for big game. We were not disappointed. Deer - both mule and white-tail - were in abundance, as were the wild turkeys. And we saw many bison. When you see those bu
